Behind the Shadows documents the plight of I Wayan Wija a Balinese Dalang (Puppet Master) who is determined to preserve the ancient art of Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet, literally “Leather Images”) by infusing it with new stories and exotic animal puppets. In the face of new technology bearing down on his paradise island, Wija struggles to reconcile his western influences with his traditional upbringing which results in a most unusual mixture or art, culture and religion and just plain entertainment.
